The Louisiana State Archives is a division of the Secretary of State’s Office. It is mandated to identify, collect, preserve, maintain and to make available records and artifacts that are so important in understanding Louisiana’s incredible and unique history and heritage.
Created by the State Legislature in 1956 to house the state’s historical records, the State Archives has called many places home. In 1987, the current home for the State Archives was officially opened on Essen Lane. A stunning building, the State Archives has been acclaimed as being one of the leading archival facilities in the U.S.
To find the Archives Letterbox:
Turn onto the road along the south side of the Archives building off of Essen Lane. At some point, take a right into one of the parking lots that will cross over to another boulevard. Take a left. You will see duck ponds. Find the pond with an island. Under the bridge you will find your prize. Please bring your own stamp pad and be discreet. The ponds are surrounded by office buildings. Take some time to visit the Archives and to feed the ducks!
