Muskegon Lake Preserve

In his essay Walking, Thoreau wrote, "Hope and the future for me are not in lawns and cultivated fields, not in towns and cities, but in the impervious and quaking swamps." In a time when more of our natural places are being consumed, I celebrate when people have the foresight to preserve and protect natural places. Once such spot, nestled on the northeast end of Muskegon Lake, is the Muskegon Lake Preserve. Folks from the Muskegon Conservation Club, along with help from community groups, have transformed this former dump-site into a nature preserve and educational site. To encourage others to visit this site I've created this letterbox (which happens to be the first box I planted). Enjoy this site and your hunt for this box!
Clues...
Down a gravel two-track, a sign shall point the way
Don't veer off to a boardwalk; let's walk (not bike) today
Climb the (older, eastern) tower to get the lay of the land
A slice of nature surrounds you, saved from the developer's hand
Notice in the distance a concrete looming tower
Built to supply Muskegon with its electric power
From the middle post take a bearing towards the plant
Round up to the the nearest 10 to know where this letterbox is at
Now divide your number by 20, and keep this single digit in mind
Climb back down the tower, for some nature you have to find
Once you're at the bottom, turn left and proceed slowly
Your prize is rather close, in a place that's rather lowly
That single digit you calculated, count that many posts ahead
Get on your knees and look around, for your search has reached its end.

Directions to the Muskegon Lake Preserve: At the stoplight at the north end of the Veteran's Memorial Causeway (Whitehall Road to the north; Holton Rd. / M-120 to the east), turn west on Lake Avenue. The Muskegon Lake Preserve is not too far ahead on your left. If you pass the Muskegon Conservation Club you've gone too far.
