Mouth of the Muskegon

December 30, 2009 - THIS BOX PULLED TEMPORARILY FOR REPAIRS. This box has fared well along the Muskegon, but it was quite soaked. I've pulled it and will create a new log book for this box. It will likely be replaced in the early spring, 2010. Please check these clues again then.

The Muskegon River is Michigan's second largest watershed. At approximately 219 miles long, it starts at Houghton and Higgins Lakes and drains approximately 2,723 square miles of land. All of this water eventually makes its way through Muskegon Lake and, eventually, Lake Michigan.

This letterbox commemorates the mouth of the Mighty Muskegon. Once used to transport millions of board feet of lumber, today the Muskegon provides valuable habitat for a wide range of wildlife and plant species, and offers recreational opportunities for Michigan's residents and visitors.

Efforts are underway to protect and preserve the Muskegon. Increased development, runoff, erosion, and pollution threaten the watershed. Fortunately, communities up and down the river are taking steps to protect this resource. To find out more, visit the Muskegon River Watershed Assembly's website at www.mrwa.org.

Clues...

(To complete the clues you'll need to unscramble certain words.)

Your search for the Mouth of the Muskegon will start at the _ _ _ _ _ (tonhr) end of the _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (kieb / lawgink) trail that meanders through _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (sukgeomn) along the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (roleshien). You can park in the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (tier dia) parking lot at the _ _ _ _ _ (thorn) end of the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (yawseacu). There's also a small dirt lot on _ _ _ _ (alke) Street not far from the trail.

Follow the trail _ _ _ _ _ (husot) over the _ _ _ _ (iman) branch of the
_ _ _ _ _ (virer), through wetlands, and past the
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (wopre ntpal). Pass over one metal _ _ _ _ _ _ (ribegd) and stop at the second one. You'll find my tribute to this place
_ _ _ _ _ (runde) the _ _ _ _ _ (xiths) 2 x 4 plank from _ _ _ _ _ (vapde) part of the trail. It's on the _ _ _ _ (stea) side of the boardwalk.

This search makes for a good bike ride. The trail continues on past Fisherman's Landing to Heritage Landing. Once a few more segments are completed, bikers and walkers will be able to talk the trail all the way to Pere Marquette Park on Lake Michigan.

Time: 1 - 1.5 hour if walking (shorter on bike)
Terrain: Easy - boardwalk / paved trail
