Elba - Home of the Lancers!

^^ NOTE: AS OF OCTOBER 28, 2004, THE PARK HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR THE WINTER. Parking Access is closed off. Determined Letterboxers would park on Main st, walk back to the park, and casually find a way over the chain link fence near the access road.^^

^^Will update when gates re-open in Spring '05^^

Elba Central School was centralized in 1937. Before the centralization Elba had ten school districts and a private school. The school buildings were generally 12ft. by 14 ft. with desks of hewn log fastened to the wall. The children would sit with their backs toward the center of the room upon benches made of split logs. One side of the room would have lower benches for the smaller children. A part of the tuition paid by each family was a supply of cord wood for the school.

In 1840's the the Elba Union School (high school) was built in the current Elba Village Park. Graduating classes, although varied in size, remained very small until the year 1921, when 11 students graduated.

Find our ECS Lancer in the park, the site of the Elba Union School.

Elba is located on Route 98 north of the NYS Thruway (Batavia exit). The Lancer can be found at the Elba Village Park. ** Access to the park is seasonal. **

Enter the driveway and park your car.

Follow the silver guardrail: don't play tennis.

Find the field of three diamonds.

From the southwest diamond run down the first base line,
counting nine on the team always dressed in green.

The Lancer is "safe" behind number nine!

Please bring your own ink pad and pencil. Have fun!
