Henry Hagg Lake and Scoggins Valley Park has been described as a “hidden gem in the western foothills of Washington County.” This recreation area is south of Forest Grove, Oregon, on highway 47. There is a day use fee of five dollars per vehicle. Additional information and directions can be found at Washington County’s website, www.co.washington.or.us and follow the links to the parks department. Be sure to bring mosquito repellent.

As with all collections, you have to start with the first, and add more later. Check back soon!

Box #1

To the Trail:
After entering the park, take a left and drive over the dam. Continue around the lake until you get to the first gravel turnout after the Scoggins Creek picnic area. The trail access is located near the southern side of the turnout. Take the trail in an easterly direction.

To the Letterbox:
If you are observant, it is not a long hike to where I am hiding. You will pass through a series of meadows where I may be seen through the early morning mist. If you listen closely, you may hear my distinctive call. I am shy and when you are near, I take refuge in the nearby trees. If you are light footed, you may see me hiding between the trail and the water. Look for an oak that branches like my antlers, one becomes two, then five. What you seek is within. Keep a sharp eye, for if you come to a small bridge, I have eluded you.

If the hunt has made you thirsty, visit my namesake winery nearby.

Note from the Transplanted Cowboys: 05/01/06 - We've moved out of the area and can not maintain this box anymore. If somebody would like to adopt it, please let us know. Thanks and happy hunting!
