They recently did some path work in this area and someone has reported by box to now be missing. I will try to get back to check it out and if needed replace it. In the meantime, consider this site lost.

The Dwarf Lake Iris is the state flower of Michigan. It is a protected species that only grows within a mile of Lake Huron and Lake Michigan in the northern part of the state.

This is a relatively level path but there may be spots where you get your feet wet so bring a spare pair of shoes.

Between Rogers City and Alpena on US23 just north of Grand Lake is the entrance to Thompson Harbor State Park. It is a gravel road. If you are heading north out of Alpena (20 minutes north) this road would be on your right. Take this road towards the parking area. The road will make a sharp turn towards the right (be sure to follow signs to parking area and don't go straight).

Once you are at the parking area there are three paths that you see by the trail head. The one farthest to the left is the beginning of Loop 3 (or end of Loop 2-same path). Take this farthest path. As you walk down the path, enjoy the excellent birding and wildflowers that are everywhere. Watch out for the poison ivy, though. At one point you come to where Loop 3 continues straight and Loop 2 veers to the right. Go right. (If you want an interesting stop, though, continue on Loop 3 and you will see a deer trail to the left which will take you out to Bear Lake. This is a cool bog with Pitcher plants and Sundews which are insectivorous plants, as well as many orchids--all of these are protected so please don't pick them.)
Continueing down the trail of Loop 2 you will come to an area where the path becomes gravel/stone. You are almost there. When you come out to an open area the path veers right again. Here there is a berm on the left which is covered with Dwarf Lake Iris. There is a log that the dirt is built up to. This is the berm just beyond the arrow sign. Reach around underneath that log and there is a hollow there where the box is. Please replace and cover with pine needles again. If you go straight from here you come out to Lake Huron and a rocky beach or you can continue down Loop 2 till it comes back out at the parking lot.

Loop 2 is 1.4 miles round trip. The letterbox is about 1/3 of the way around (going backwards via Loop 3 that is) Enjoy.
