I will Fight No More Forever
Surrender Speech of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce

I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed. Looking Glass is dead. Toohulhulsote is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say yes or no. He who led the young men is dead.

It is cold and we have no blankets. The little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are--perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children and see how many I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead.

Hear me, my chiefs. I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.

Chief Joseph Letterbox

This letterbox is a tribute to Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce tribe. It is hidden along the Nez Perce trail in Idaho, very close to West Yellowstone. The stamp is taken from a photograph of Chief Joseph later in his life.

Difficulty: easy

Clue: The letterbox is hidden in the Wayside Area for Howard Springs, four miles outside of the Island Park area boundary, quite near West Yellowstone. Park in the lot, cross the small bridge and walk until you come to the "day use only" sign. Behind the sign, follow the wagon trail to the creek, but don't cross it. You will then turn right and follow the trail up the creek. Pass the split tree. You will come to three downed trees, the second and third of which come together around a standing pine. Step over the first tree and look under the second tree behind the rocks to find the letterbox.
