"P0rCUPINE DEN"
To Holt Pond Preserve:
In Naples, Me. take Rt.302 to Perley Rd.(about 2 miles north of the causeway in Naples). Travel 1.5 miles on the Perley Rd. to the intersection of Chaplin's Mill Rd. & Grist Mill Rd. Continue straight on the Grist Rd. 0.3 miles & turn left into a small parking area; this would be the parking area 1/4 mile BEFORE the Holt Pond parking area. A large rock will be on your left; a log is across the trail head on your right. (Should warn you that it is always quite "buggy" in this area. You might want to be dressed appropriately & use repellent,)
The Holt Pond Preserve was created in 1971 when Lakes Environmental Association purchased 30 acres of woodland & stream. The preserve now contains over 400 acres covering both the northern & southern shores of the preserve & across the street from the parking area to Byron's Hill. The Holt Pond Preserve connects to the Loon Echo Land Trust's Bald Pate Preserve and these tracks of land together provide ample habitat for many of Maine's animals, birds, amphibians and reptiles.

•••••"FROM THE TRAILHEAD, PROCEED UP THE HILL FOR ABOUT A 5 MIN. WALK. BEFORE YOU REACH A CLEARING YOU SHOULD SEE A CAIRN ON YOUR LEFT. TURN LEFT & LOOK FOR A CLUMP OF TREE TRUNKS ALL NEXT TO EACH OTHER. THE BOX WILL BE FOUND IN THE MIDDLE OF THEM.
GREATER TREATS YET AWAIT YOU! IF YOU CONTINUE IN THE SAME DIR. FROM THE BOX AND WALK ABOUT 10 PACES, YOU MIGHT FIND A PORCUPINE'S DEN. IT WILL LOOK LIKE A MOUND OF FOUNDATION WEDGES ALL PILED TOGETHER.LOOK INSIDE AND YOU SHOULD SEE SOME PORCUPINE SCAT. QUILLS MAY BE LOCATED AROUND THE DEN.
IF YOU'RE REALLY LUCKY, YOU MAY VISIT AT A TIME WHEN LADYSLIPPERS ARE IN BLOOM!"
( PLEASE PLACE THE BOX BACK AS FOUND AND PLEASE LEAVE EVERYTHING ELSE UNDISTURBED IN THIS BEAUTIFUL WETLAND AREA!•••••
