Purgatory Falls may sound like an unpleasant place but in fact is just the opposite! It is a beautiful area with rolling waters, a deep gorge and a waterfall. Legend has it that the Devil once attempted to lure the folks of Mont Vernon to his lonely lair by promising them a baked bean supper. At first it went as planned but when the Devil reached in the 'pot' for the beans his foot sunk into the rock from the intense heat. The Devil shouted out and scared all the people away. Can you see the footprint near the beanpot?

Directions: Take rt. 101 to Milford. Take the exit for rt. 13 north. Continue through the Milford Oval and take a left at Rite Aid Pharmacy onto Mt. Vernon St. After .4 miles bear left onto N. River Rd. (This road turns into Center Rd.) After 5.4 miles take a right onto Johnson Corner Rd. Go .9 miles and take a right on Purgatory Falls Rd. This road will turn into a dirt road. Approx. 1 mile you will see Echo Valley Campground on the left. Stay to the right and the parking area will be on the right.

Clues: Follow the trail of yellow marks to the river. Cross over the bridge. *note: the bridge is upside-down but still sturdy and passable* Immediately after the bridge take the trail to the right. Follow the trail along the water to the falls area. View the falls and the beanpot area. PLEASE USE EXTREME CAUTION - there are no handrails or safety barriers. From the falls area follow a trail at 70 degrees past the picnic table. Look straight ahead at a fallen birch that points to your prize!

You can hike around the whole area, just check with the map at the trail head. The beanpot footprint is easier to see from the other side.

*****Alive and well as of 9/7/04. And... The bridge is fixed, and better than ever!********
