He called it "The Place". He lived there with his collies, and in 1919 began to put their adventures into books, which remain popular to this day. Although the land around the Place is not quite the "North Jersey hinterland" anymore, the lake remains, and a park now preserves the memory of the man and his dogs.
Begin just to the south of the parking lot, at the grave of the first collie to live here, subject of the first book. Proceed at 160 degrees up the hill, to the headstone of the faultless friend. Take the first letter of his name. Behind the grave is a path. Turn left on it and go to the stone pillar. It was dedicated on someone's 100th birthday. Take the second letter of his name. Head toward the springhouse and stop at Champion Rock. Among the graves there is that of the first dog's mate. Take the second letter of her name. (You DID read the book, didn't you?) Head north to the edge of the lawn and find the two graves of the later arrivals. Take the second letter of the name of either. Not far from you now, a dog is buried whose name you find with the four letters you've taken. From there, go 130 degrees way up the hill to the base of a big tree fallen across your path. The box is in a hollow on the far side.
6/16/04 - Two more trees have fallen! The one you want is the one in the middle.
1/18/06 - This box may be missing, or it is WAAAAAAY down under the trunk, with a lot of mud and debris washed on top of it. We will check again in spring to see if the box needs replacement.
3/1/06 - Dug away 8 inches of washed-in dirt, and stil no box. Will replace.
