August 21, 2010: The boxes were six years old,a log was damp, and a log book was missing. We replaced all log books and created three different stamps.

SO HERE'S YOUR CHANCE for a beautiful hike and a chance to explore some mysteries. It is a three part puzzle made even more compelling because the stamp has been cut into thirds, and the directions for the third part will only be found in one of the other boxes. All three complete a scene. You will need your compass and you should have a camera.

Highway #242, the Old McKenzie Pass Highway, closes due to snow in the Winter. You can call the McKenzie Ranger District at 541-822-3381 if you have any questions about the road or trail access.

To start, take highway 126 East past McKenzie Bridge and the Ranger Station. Two miles later, take a right onto the Old McKenzie Pass Highway (#242) and go nine miles to the parking lot at the Proxy Falls Trailhead. You will find restrooms, but no water. This is a user fee area. The trail is a loop about one mile long. Expect to see two waterfalls, plenty of lava, and beautiful vine maple. This makes it a special opportunity for photos. The trail is mostly gentle with a short steep section at the East trailhead.

UPPER PROXY FALLS Letterbox:------When you get to the trail intersection for Upper Proxy Falls just rest your back against the trail post, take a sight at 101 degrees magnetic, and scramble twenty paces to a big fellow. Three chips off the rock are in front, and the middle one moves! Roll it off its' bed of moss to see what's there.

LOWER PROXY FALLS Letterbox:-----At the trail junction for this falls, you will find a tree holding the sign. Look at 300 degrees magnetic and see a large rock. That's where you want to go. The best way is down the trail 15 steps, turn to your left, and work your way to the far end of the rock. We planted moss upon the box to see if it would grow.
(It did, so we put pieces of bark over the box too.)

There is lots to see, so take your time and look around. Enjoy the surprise of the upper falls. We hope you will continue to the PROXY MYSTERY.
