On northbound I-75 in Cheboygan County, near mile marker 317, is a Michigan Department of Transportation (M-DOT) rest area and scenic overlook. It's indicated by a solid black triangle on the state highway map.

Note that this rest area is only accessible from northbound I-75. If you're traveling south, you'll pass the rest area and can exit 4 miles later at exit 313. Turn left at the stop sign, onto north US-27, and you'll soon be able to enter onto northbound I-75 towards the rest area. Then, when finished, you'll continue on northbound I-75 to exit 322, where you can exit and cross over to the southbound I-75 entrance ramp, and continue on your way. The total detour is about 18 miles out of your way: not a huge deal, but enough to make it much more convenient to make this stop during a northbound trip.

This rest area, like many others in northern Michigan, is closed during the winter months.

Clues:

As you enter the rest area, bear to the right. Signs will indicate the road to the scenic overlook parking area at the top of the hill. Here, three observation decks overlook the highway, with a spectacular view of Burt Lake off to the west. It is especially breathtaking at sunset.

From the main observation deck in the center, you'll have a great vantage point from which to watch the cars and trucks whizzing past on I-75. Don't be shy -- give them a wave! You'll be surprised how many will notice you and wave back; the deck is easily visible to motorists.

After you've "done the wave," turn around back to the parking area, then walk to your left to find the nature trail. Head down the fairly steep hill, to a birch stump trio on your left. Then go 11 paces at 310 degrees to a poplar tree trunk. The box is hidden here.

Please be discreet! There are usually many people around, either in the picnic area or walking along the nature trail. It's probably best to take the box over to one of the picnic tables to stamp in, rather than stopping right on the nature trail.

After you are finished, please re-hide the box carefully, making sure that it is concealed with bark and twigs on all sides and completely hidden from view.

Allow at least 30 minutes for your stop.

--2007 Update-- A big THANKS to NorseGnome for the maintenance assistance by replacing the log book for us in 2007! Now there's room for nearly 100 more finders.

--2015 Update-- And another big THANKS to Plymouth Seekers for replacing the log book AND the box for us in August 2015! Thanks for helping keep this 11-year-old letterbox alive. (Who is that young man in the photo, anyway?)
