“Branching Out” Letterbox
This is my first letterbox in Pennsylvania. It is the state I was born and raised in, and that will always be home. This letterbox is located in the Churchville Nature Center. This is a moderate size nature center, but has plenty to see and explore. Lots of wildlife wandering around.
Enter the trails behind the visitors’ center, following under the arch for The Dr. Edwin H. Kroeker Trail. When the trail splits, follow the green trail (and the pond will appear on your left through the trees). Pass the red trail; keep going on the green trail. When it splits this time, it will not make a difference which one you take, they end up the same place, but if you take the left fork you will be treated to a very peaceful spot to view the reservoir. After you have rested and enjoyed the critters, get back on the green trail and continue your journey. Pass the blue trail and you will soon be following a green metal fence on your right. From the eastern corner of the fence, count 30 paces. STOP! Look to your right for a large tree with what appear to be three smaller trees growing from the base (one looks like a big “snake”). In a cavity in the smaller tree, covered by bark, is “Branching Out”.
Enjoy your hike through the nature center but keep in mind that you need to stay on the main trails. There are a few off shoots that the locals have made. All nature center trails are well marked by colored arrows. Also, a pace is one count for every other step
