FYI--as of 6-20-12 there have been 3 reports that this 'box is missing so we've listed it as RETIRED. This is a really neat place though and you'd enjoy it even without finding a letterbox!

Difficulty: You can drive right to this box or enjoy a hike full of stairs and boardwalk while viewing the amazing, natural terraces and hot pools in this area.
Fee: $20 to enter "America's first par k" good for 7 days. All attractions, including these terraces are free after that.

The importance of good hiking boots when trekking in the wilds of Yellow**Stone is of the utmost importance. When they give out, your feet will give out too and a trip that would have been enjoyable will become a bad memory. Fortunately, this box allows for regular tennis shoes or even sandals.

Your choice for this box is to walk up the boardwalk and stairs viewing these amazing, boiling and spilling limestone terraces and pools as you go OR to drive to the parking lot at the top. If you only can see ONE of the spots in this area, choose "Canary Terrace".

Walk up the 1/2 mile of boardwalk and stairs to the parking lot at the top OR From Mammoth, drive west, approx. 1 mile, to the entrance to Upper Terrace Drive which is a one-way loop. At said parking lot, find the information sign for "Fort Yellow**Stone". Spot a large rock at 140 degrees from the sign that sits under a large juniper tree. Under the SW corner of this rock, under asphalt chunks, find this double-sided, hand-carved stamp.

This is a highly traveled place and there might not be a moment to be discrete. Here's a plan. This is a shady spot in a sunny parking lot and the rock is perfect for sitting on under the shade of the juniper. You can even sit on the ground next to the rock without looking too weird. Just remember to rehide well with all the asphalt chunks.
