This letterbox is nestled in a quiet, Sherwood-like forest area in the east hills of the Upper Hood River Valley. This is the perfect hike if you’re in the Upper Valley and have a couple of hours to catch some gorgeous views of the valley and Mt. Hood and stroll amongst some pretty decent old-growth timber. Hubby-Doug and I planted this box on a warm summer evening with a great afternoon breeze and a plethora of blooming wildflowers.

To the Trailhead: From I-84, take exit 64 that places you on Highway 35 south. Enjoy a 16 mile drive south towards Mt. Hood to Smullin Road (about 1.5 miles past the Mt. Hood Country Store). You can also get to this spot from the south and/or west side of Mt. Hood by traveling Hwy 26 to Hwy 35 to Smullin Road. Turn east onto Smullin Road and travel 2 tenths of a mile to the trailhead junction. Turn left and park in the gravel turnout area.

Cross the little bridge that crosses a ditch and begin your hike up the Oak Ridge Trail (Trail no. 688-A) that extends 2.3 miles to the junction of the Surveyor’s Ridge Trail (Trail no. 688). Both of these trails are used by hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers, so be aware. The trail provides an elevation gain of 1800 feet and offers both scenic views of the upper valley and Mt. Hood and wooded forests that make you feel like your in Sherwood Forest with Robin Hood’s merry-men!! There’s some pretty impressive old-growth timber in there that deserve a tip of the hat if you’re donning one. You’ll cross a couple of forestry roads on your hike. Just keep to the trail. When you reach a livestock gate, you’ve made it about halfway up. Stop and take a breather and enjoy the soft breeze that seems to always be blowing when I stop there. When you go through the gate, be sure to close it behind you and continue on. After crossing the second forestry road, you’re only about a quarter mile away from the top!! The end of the Oak Ridge Trail converges with the Surveyor’s Ridge trail that travels north and south. Last seen on an old growth stump is what’s left of what appears to be a blessing amulet that someone placed some time ago. Now for the prize!!

On the east side of the trail junction, nailed to an old evergreen are a couple of trail markers. Stand beneath them, turn in the direction of Bald Butte and find an old giant-turned-resting bench at 150 degrees magnetic and about 12 paces away. Tucked away under the bench, hidden by bark is your reward for a hike well-done. Sign in, take a break, then enjoy your leisurely trek back down the hill.
