BOX MISSING 08/26/05 (WILL REPLACE NEXT TIME WE'RE IN NEWPORT)

"Six little sandals lost their way,
When on the beach they went to play.
After a romp in the white sea foam,
They couldn't find their way back home."

Please find these six lost sandals! Look at Beverly Beach State Park, which is located 7 miles north of Newport along Highway 101, on the east side of the road. There is a free day use parking area on the left side of the entrance road, before you reach the fee station. The nature trail begins beside campsite #C3, past the visitor center.

1. Read the "Made in the Shade" nature sign.
2. Sit on the bench if you want a little rest before you begin.
3. Get on your feet and start walking up to the left along the trail.
4. Read the "Winter Haven" nature sign.
5. Walk 50 paces to a "spider leg" tree on the left.
6. Walk 50 paces around a small bend to a large tall tree on the left.
7. Walk 150 paces to a fork in the trail. Left to the stream, right to continue on the main trail. Stay on the main trail (right).
8. Walk 120 paces (you'll be across from campsite E9) and look to the right. Up a steep hill you'll see a large, broad-based, gnarled old giant with lots of nooks and crannies in the roots. Another fallen giant points like a needle to its roots.
9. Climb up the dirt hill and go up behind the tree.
10. Look to the roots and open the bark door to find the six little sandals.

We hope you like our letterbox!
