Drive-by on I-80 between Elko and Carlin
The mountains of the Basin and Range Province trend north-south. The Humboldt River cuts an east-west notch through these mountains that allowed the "path of least resistance west" for emigrants heading to California. This together with water and vegetation for the animals, provided by the Humboldt River, made this the best route west.
The Humboldt river meanders a distance of 350 miles from headwaters in Elko County to its termination in an alkali sink (the fate of all Great Basin rivers) near Lovelock.
DIRECTIONS: From I-80 take the Hunter exit #292 and go to the stone interpretive sign on the southward side of the interstate, just off the exit. (You will be able to go across to both the north and south sides.) For more history, check out the kiosks on the northern side.
CLUE: Look underneath the Hasting's Cutoff stone information sign in back, closer to the garbage bins. There will be loose rocks hiding the small black pouch.
Please be discreet (I started picking up garbage when someone drove up to the sign). Replace the rocks so the pouch is well hidden.
