This box is located off I-80, along the old highway (a 2-mile stretch of road) in historic Carlin Canyon.

Before the freeway and tunnels were built, Carlin Canyon was the only passage through these mountains along the Humboldt River. Many early Native Americans, explorers, trappers, emigrants and pioneers passed through this narrow steep-walled canyon. Later the railroad came through, and then it was re-routed through tunnels. The tracks were removed and converted into a road for automobiles. There are a couple interpretive kiosks and some interesting geology to be seen here. In the canyon, fossils from an ancient ocean might be found, as well as a variety of birds around the cliffs, vegetation and water. And of course, as always in the desert - watch for reptiles.

DIRECTIONS:
From I-80 take the East Carlin Exit #282. Follow the frontage road on the south side of the freeway to the east. It goes on into Carlin Canyon. Park at the second set of kiosks.

CLUES:
From this parking area, look across the street (approximately eastward). There is a sage brush lined ridge at a little above eye-level, on the mountain side. Go to the southern end of the ridge, to a white post with a red top, warning of the buried fiber optic cable.

Carefully scramble up the loose rocks to the top of that side of the ridge. From the top, facing the mountain slope, look down. About 3 steps away is a "lone" gray/yellowish rock that is larger than the other surrounding rocks. It is a triangular rock pointing to another pile of rocks under a large sage brush. It’s about 3 steps to the pointing rock, (the old hiding spot) and about 4-5 more steps to the new spot. Please be discreet and re-hide well with the loose rocks.
