This is a fairly easy box, about 1 mile round trip. The box is a replacement for the St Anger letterbox, which has gone home to Rhode Island. Mike and Christine graciously suggested that we recycle their clues, so a rush job was done on a new stamp for this location. The letterbox is hidden in the Mission Trail Nature Preserve in Carmel, California. The trailhead is at the intersection of Mountain View Avenue and Crespi Avenue. Take the Ocean Avenue turnoff from Highway 1, continue on through one intersection till the next. the Village Inn should be on your right. Mountain View Avenue is the road going up to your left. The trailhead is about .2 miles from here. You can park in town onstreet for up to 90 minutes.
At the trailhead you will see the Mission Trail Nature Preserve sign. From here follow the trail down to the bridge and cross it. Take an immediate right, over another bridge, then an immediate left, up the hill, past a house on your left.
At the next fork take the trail at 201, then at the next fork take the trail at 224. At the 4-way intersection take the trail at 312, following the wood chip path to a "T," where you will follow the path at 208. Follow this wide path to a bench and a bridge. From the bridge, take 11 paces at 60 to the big tree. Take the trail at 340 up the hill. Shortly you will come to a sign. Take the trail at 347, and at the next fork take the trail at 328 for about 19 steps. You will notice a large uprooted tree stump on the left side of the trail. Check under the SW side of the stump beneath some bark and wood pieces for the Piña Monterey letterbox.
After stamping in, continue on the trail until you reach a wood chip path which you will follow at 6. At the next "T," take the path at 20, and eventually you will be back where you started. Have fun and watch out for poison oak. We do not live in the area so please let us know if you find the box.
