Difficulty: Drive-By Last maintained 10/05/14
Directions: Exit off the NYS Thruway at Kingston. Head west on rte 28. (Be sure to bring directions for The Cat-Skills, Bridge to Nowhere LB, and Mt Tremper LB). This is a long drive from the thruway but well worth it.
History: The 'Old Up and Down' was slang for the Ulster and Delaware County Railroad. It picked up passengers coming up the Hudson by boat on the Rondout in Kingston then brought them to their summer resorts in the Catskills. It also brought items like bluestone, fresh milk and wood to the 'big city'. Rte 28 parallels most of this ride that was taken in the early 1900's by train.
Clues:
Just west of Shandaken,
Find the first rest area on Rte 28.
From the historical sign site 110* to a vine
entwisted oak tree; beneath the slanted stone.
Please be sure to be discreet as this is a busy area. Now head out for the RR museum 2 miles west on 28. Just a little way up the road is a train that you can take up the stream to ride an inner tube on the water back to this place. Have fun here or head up to Mt Tremper LB and then cool off on a tube ride later!
Please contact the placer with any news concerning the box!
