Here's a box for the hardy hikers. Although located just a couple miles from I-15 this is not a drive-by.
Take exit 99 (Moose Creek Road) off I-15 south of Butte. Follow the gravel road about 3.5 miles to parking area for Humbug Spires primitive area. Be sure to bring water as none is available. There is an out house though. Brochures for the area including a map are available at the information sign.
Follow the main trail towards the "Wedge" one of the spires popular with rock climbers. The hike is about 3 miles one way & uphill - boots or good walking shoes recommended. When you reach the old prospector's cabin, go around to the back. Siting at about 15 degrees you'll see a big old Douglas Fir just beyond the water pipe for the spring (about 25 steps.) Look for a rock climber behind the big tree under a smaller fallen log.
For those hardy enough to make this hike there's a bonus waiting for you in the box.
You get a nice view of the spires from I-15 between mileposts 104 and 105.
