In the constellation of Cygnus
There lurks a mysterious, invisible force
The black hole
Of Cygnus X-1
Six stars of the northern cross
In mourning for their sister’s loss
In a final flash of glory
Nevermore to grace the night…

So begins the final transmission from the Rocinante…

We were the priests of the Temples of Syrinx. Once we governed every facet of life of the Solar Federation. Our wisdom and guidance had created a peaceful world full of equality and Brotherhood. Until one devastating day…

A cultural coup had ended our reign. Artifacts of the elder race were discovered and their devastating ideas corrupted the common man. As we fled in self-exile, we took with us the knowledge to reclaim our rightful thrones. Ironically, the elder race will help us in our task; specifically, the records of the experimental Rocinante…

Invisible
To telescopic eye
Infinity
The star that would not die
All who dare
To cross her course
Are swallowed by
A fearsome force
Through the void
To be destroyed
Or is there something more?
Atomized---at the core
Or through the astral door---
To soar…

Our vision: to venture into the singularity that is known as Cygnus X-1. Our research leads us to believe it acts as a tunnel that funnels time backwards. Returning to Earth at a time long forgotten, our rule will begin anew!

Once our temples rose from the heart of every city. Now, they are shabby and small. Once seats of wisdom, what few remain are simply seats of rest for weary souls.

I set a course just east of Lyra
And northwest of Pegasus
Flew into the light of Deneb
Sailed across the Milky Way
On my ship the Rocinante
Wheeling through the galaxies
Headed for the heart of Cygnus
Headlong into mystery
The x-ray is her siren song
My ship cannot resist her long
Nearer to my deadly goal
Until the black hole---
Gains control…

Two of our remaining temples welcome you to our island of exile. Our quest begins where the fourth once sat. Just behind it, you will encounter the large star Vega, of the constellation Lyra. 33 parsecs east of Vega you will find a 5-star cluster that resides in Pegasus. Rocinante’s directions take us northwest for 45 parsecs to a 4-star cluster (of what constellation? Does it matter?). Adjusting our course northerly, Deneb is just 55 parsecs away. Once ablaze with triumph, Deneb now weeps at our loss…

A jaunt across the Milky Way---Plotting an easterly route, at 30 parsecs, we pass another 5-star cluster. 55 parsecs takes us near a binary system, where two stars battle for ownership of a piece of a shattered starship. 70 parsecs out, we find another binary star system (in very close orbit around each other), around which more flotsam lies. Could these fragments be of the lost Rocinante? 35 more parsecs lead to a shocking discovery: a large intact engine, apparently from a starcraft. A detailed examination of the debris confirms that this was once the Rocinante.

Resting here for a time, we have noticed a peculiarity about the engine: it orbits a seemingly invisible point in space, its position fixed forever, like a one-faced moon. After much discussion between the Brothers, we decide to cautiously follow a southerly direction from the large engine.

At five parsecs out, we detect nothing unusual. Ten parsecs yield the same data. Eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, FIFTEEN! The tug comes from roughly 35 parsecs away. By now it is too late! We can only gaze upon the distorted star that must hide the black hole, its bottom wide and misshapen by the powerful forces below it.
T i m e s t r e t c h e s t o a n e t e r n i t y . . . .

So ends the final transmission from the Red Star…

Spinning, whirling
Still descending
Like a spiral sea,
Unending
Sound and fury
Drowns my heart
Every nerve
Is torn apart…

To be continued?

Lakeside Island Park is located at 14801 Island St. Island Street is west from Hayes Rd. just north of 19 Mile Rd. Consult a map for directions from Schoenherr or M-59 (both through subdivisions).

As this park seems to be a big party spot at times, this box is extra small (through slightly larger than micro). Please, please, please be sure to re-hide them very well. The logbook and stamp just fit themselves (please pay attention to how they are packed, so you don't encounter any difficulties when repacking). Thank you!!

*****NEW for 2009*****Many of the stars have gone nova and no longer appear as they once did, Deneb being the worst. The star distorted by Cygnus X-1 still stands against its agressor, and, I believe, has been located in 2008 with the sky in equal disarray.*****
