Brand new replacement box placed 9/3/07, same spot different stamp.
Easy Hike, Less than 1/2 mile walk. Stairs
In the Sequoia National Forest between the Kings Canyon National Park and Sequoia National Park off of the General's Highway near Big Meadows is Buck Rock Fire Lookout. It was built in 1923 and is still used today to look for fires started by lightning strikes.
After driving as close as you can, hike up to the base of the rock. Climb the rocky path to the stairs. Put your hands on the railing as if you are going to walk up the stairs. Now hop off the hop down to your left. Look under the rock ledge against the larger rock.
Be sure and make the trip to the top, it is only a little more than 170 stairs and there are 360 degree views. (The fire lookout lady likes candybars)
