Box last found/checked: Received a report on 23-APR-09 that the box was found open w/contents missing, most likely due to an animal. The box will not be replaced.

Box was moved to a new location on 14-JUL-06 because the path to the original location now has a sign that says: "Restricted Area...Violators subject to arrest." After we moved the box and were leaving the park, what did we see on the road? A real, live POSSUM! We got a good look at it before it decided to scurry back into the undergrowth.
=========================

The opossum is North America's only marsupial (pouched animal). It has grey to black fur; black eyes; pink nose, feet and tail; black ears; and a pointed nose.

It does not have a territory, but is always on the move, going to wherever the food is (sounds like a letterboxer looking for Tupperware!!)

When confronted with a dangerous situation, the opossum will often turn over on its back, acting as if it were dead. When the potential attacker loses interest in the opossum, or simply forgets why it bothered to bother in the first place, the opossum resumes its daily routine. This effective political method of coming to terms with the world and its more belligerent folks has come to be known as Playing Possum. (Perhaps this explains why there are so many “lurkers” on the LBNA message board??).

This box was planted for the 2004 Great Lakes Gathering at Moraine Hills State Park in Illinois. The clues were initially posted at the gathering but I’m also posting them on the website since it will remain as a “permanent” box (assuming no possums or humans remove it!).

CLUES:
Time estimate: 20-30 minutes

Go to Opossum Run parking lot and take the trail near the restrooms. Follow the gravel path and you'll soon notice another trail merges from the left. Continue on up a gradual incline. As you round a slight curve, you'll notice some logs on the right and many fallen trees on the hill on your left. Look for the tall twins 13 steps to the left of the trail, one alive and one half stripped and dead. Stand at the twins and face generally southwest (we forgot our compass!). Take 35 steps to a leaning uprooted tree that is supported by a slender young tree. [NOTE: On 8-OCT-07 we received a note that the "leaning" tree is now almost totally down now.] The possum has chosen this spot as his retreat, in the log under the leaning tree.

I don't live nearby, so I'd appreciate an email if you find the box to give me an update on it's status - Thanks!
