Red Bench Letterbox

Location: State: NH County: Carroll Town: Bartlett

Planted by: Tweety and Mr. Coon 5/25/04

Difficulty: Easy walk of less than an hour along an interesting trail around a small lake.

Driving directions: Route 302 to Crawford Notch.

Background:
The box is planted near a scenic overlook spot from which we watched the Mt. Washington cog railway train climb what we think was the Jacob’s Ladder portion of its trip. Actually the day we planted the box we didn’t see any mountains at all, just the railroad tracks right in front of us. The Amonoosuc Lake trail departs from the rear of the new (open August 2003) Crawford Notch AMC lodge. The new lodge is built at the top of the notch on the site of the old Crawford Notch Hotel. There are facilities there for overnight stays, especially for groups, a nice cafeteria, small store, and a bunkhouse for through hikers.

Directions to the box:
Park in the AMC lodge lot or near Saco Lake and head down the gravel path behind the lodge. Just after you enter the woods you’ll see the sign for the Amonoosuc Lake loop trail. We went to the right and returned the other way. At the far end of the lake find the sign for the spur trail to the red bench overlook. At the end of this short (.3 mile) spur you will come upon the red (yup, it is) bench.
From the southern end (your left, facing it) of the bench sight at about due west to some hemlock trees. The second one with a trunk over six inches thick, about 15 to 20 feet away, shelters the box under some debris just behind it. We went back with Mary Manatee and the Yachtsman to have them check the directions and some other people came along while we were there so it may be busy. Maybe you can introduce some people to the hobby, it seems as though anyone there would be the appreciative type.
