The letterbox is located at the beautiful Norway Ridge Pathway, Alpena County, MI. From U.S. 23, turn onto Werth Road. (Werth Road branches off 23 at the traffic light by Kmart at the south end of Alpena. If you are traveling to Alpena from the south, it will be the first light you'll encounter in town.)Travel on Werth Road about three miles, watch for the sign and make a right turn into the parking lot. Near the far end of the parking lot is a hill with a sign where you'll find a map of the trails.

Consulting the trail map, proceed to point 6. The trail is a series of loops, so you can get there in a variety of ways. The simplest would be to take point 1 to 2 to 6, but any of the other routes would do just as well.

You'll see a bench at 6. Take a break if you need to! Then continue toward 7--you'll notice the trail is now point-to-point, rather than looped. After a stretch of woods, you'll turn a corner and see a boardwalk by the pond. Follow the boardwalk and stop at its second bend. To your left, bordering the edge of the pond, is a large clump of maple--about eight trunks. Between this and the boardwalk you'll see a short stump. This is the pinpoint. Look under the boardwalk by this stump and you'll see the box sitting there, next to a support.

Occasionally some of our furry woodland friends have been nudging this box out of place. If you don't find it in the spot described, it may pay to look a few yards each way in the surrounding area (it has a blue lid). I will continue to check on it--any advice about how to deter curious critters would be welcome!

Continue on to enjoy more of the trail or return to the entrance using another route! If you are visiting in late spring, you are sure to see many pink lady-slippers along the way. I would recommend waterproof boots, though, if you're visiting after a spell of wet weather as a few parts of the trail can get soggy. Insect repellant is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for a comfortable walk.

Terrain: Easy, but can be mucky in spots in the spring
Distance to box: About 3/4 mile, one way
