Athens artist and educator, Bob Hart, has designed and constructed a meditative trail honoring the victims of the September 11th tragedy. The memorial was completed in the summer of 2002 and remains open to the public. The winding trail features the names of all the victims on wooden posts and three symbolic sculptures representing the Pentagon, the World Trade Center, and Flight 93. Sculptures by other area artists are also present at the memorial.

To find the 9/11 Memorial Trail letterbox, simply locate the stone marker #67. The letterbox is among the stones at the base of the wooden figure nearby. Please close the box tightly when replacing. Take your time in the memorial to study the sculptures and reflect on the events of September 11th.

The September 11th Memorial Trail is located in eastern Athens off of Highway 78 heading toward Lexington. Traveling on 78 (Lexington Hwy), pass Wal-Mart on the left and turn right on Morton Road. This road is about one mile from Wal-Mart and Robert Hardeman Road will be on the left when you turn. Travel about five miles and turn left on Morton Farm Lane. Go .4 miles and turn right at mailbox 320. The trail begins about ten yards up the driveway on the right.

COMMENTS:

July 3rd. Girl scout troop 3050 checked this box on July 3, 2004. Everything was fine. This is a very nice place, I don't think any of us left with a dry eye !! Thanks, Michael

July 9th. We were very touched by the 911 Memorial, and have pledged to bring the kids to see it sometime. The artist should be very proud of the work; makes me wish I could have followed my dream and made a living as an artist. -Red

July 30th. I found this one in good shape today. You carved a very appropriate stamp for a beautiful location.
Thanks for finding such a great location. --Ginger

July 31st. My daughter and I visited this letter box on July 31, 2004. I cannot find the words to describe our overwhelming sense of gratitude for such a heartfelt tribute. Not only for the site, but to have a letterbox
located within the memorial. We were deeply touched by Bob Hart's creation. We are so grateful to you for locating a letterbox here. Thank you so much for your time and efforts in this endeavor. --Joyce and Sarah Larson

I just adopted this box on April 17, 2011. I will check it's status and post any changes. I look forward to keeping this box going. It is in a wonderful place that more people should know about. Please share the info on this memorial site. Peggydale
