It is believed that the University of Georgia mascot, the white English bulldog, was selected to imitate the mascot of Yale. The university founder and first president, Abraham Baldwin, attended Yale. On November 3, 1920, a reporter for the Atlanta Journal said that the bulldog would be a good mascot for the school because “there is a certain dignity about a bulldog, as well as ferocity.” Reporters then started using the term in their articles about UGA football, and the mascot has apparently stuck.
