Description
Located at the northernmost accessible tip of New Zealand’s scenic North Island, at the end of the Aupouri Peninsula, the Cape Reinga Letterbox is easily accessible by road.
Lashed by winds, pounded by surf and sand or soothed by the calm of sunlit days, the northern tip of New Zealand has a wild and unpredictable nature. Around its shores sweep the currents of the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean which meet in a foaming swell of broken water over the Columbia Bank just west of Cape Reinga.
The Cape Reinga Lighthouse is a prominent landmark located on Cape Reinga at the end of the road and is included in the Te Paki Recreational Reserve which includes not only Cape Reinga, but also most of the accessible beaches, the dunelands, close to 1,000 recorded archaeological sites, Te Paki Stream, a hinterland of scrub covered hills and 2,900 ha of pastoral farmland.
The whole of the northern tip of the North Island is steeped in Maori tradition and the heritage of their past. It is the most spiritually significant area in the country, for it is here that after death, all Maori spirits travel to the pohutukawa tree on the headland cliffs of Cape Reinga and descend into the underworld (reinga) by sliding down the twisted roots to fall into the sea below. They climb out again on to Ohaua, the highest point of the Three Kings Islands to the NW of Cape Reinga, to bid their last farewell before returning to the land of their ancestors, Hawaiiki-A-Nui.
Maori had occupied Northland for hundreds of years before Abel Tasman sailed in for water to the Three Kings Islands in 1643. He was the first European to sight North Cape and also named Cape Maria van Damien. It was another 126 years before both Captain Cook and the French captain Jean de Surveille sighted the north coast after which came the whalers, the traders and the missionaries.
Once you find the Cape Reinga Letterbox, be sure to enjoy the local sea turtle.
Clues
Follow Highway #1 north from Kaitaia to the end of the road at the northern most accessible point in New Zealand. There is a parking area with an information shelter in the parking area.
From the parking area, look back up the road about 100 metres.
There is a dirt pullout on the west side of the road.
At the NW end of the pullout, next to a small path leading downhill, there is a rock (something not very common in this area) beside a typical low Native Daphne bush.
The Cape Reinga Letterbox is hidden behind this rock under several smaller stones.
Once you have found the Cape Reinga Letterbox and signed in, thank you for replacing the Letterbox to ensure the integrity of its hiding place.

If, due to construction or other disturbance, the Cape Reinga Letterbox requires relocation, please feel free to reposition the letterbox in another secure nearby spot.
