***WARNING Please wear orange if hiking in this area. A dog was shot while walking with his family.

Directions: from Manchester drive west on Rt. 101 to Amherst. Turn right on Horace Greeley Road (8 miles from the junction of Rt. 114 and Rt. 101. Follow Horace Greeley Road for 0.5 miles. Turn left on Brook Road. Look for ACC (Amherst Conservation Commission) signs and Joe English Reservation signs. Parking is 1.5 miles further on the left.

Joe English Reservation is bounded by the US Air Force Satellite Tracking Station which is still active. In the 1940-1950s the area was used as a practice bombing range, it is therefore well posted. It is currently maintained as a wildlife preserve.

“Joe English was a real person, a Pennacook Indian named Merrimacomet. “Joe English’ was a derisive name given to him by members of his tribe in Massachusetts who banished him to New Hampshire for befriending the white settlers. According to legend, Joe was hunting one morning and was surprised by a small group of Indians who were intent on capturing him. The braves chased Joe up the slope of the hill that now bears his name, confident he would not escape the rocky precipice that awaited him on the other side. Joe, who was known for being a swift runner, managed to escape by finding shelter under an overhanging rock. From his hideaway he watched his pursuers crash through the underbrush and tumble to their deaths over steep rocks.”
excerpt from Hiking the Monadnock Region by Joe Adamowicz.

Easy loop hike through deciduous forest, to a beaver pond and Lookout Rock, a large granite outcrop. About 1.5 miles-- takes a little over an hour for the loop. Trail maps available at the head. This is a very dog friendly area as there are always many dogs taking their owners for a hike.
