The box was checked on 6/11/2008. It was in good condition and being used.
The hike alone is worth the drive, it goes up to a ridge and then down to water level. But there is also a swift flowing, gravel filled waterway for you to enjoy. You'll see water falling over drops and through wing dams. Come in the right months and watch the spawning salmon. What is this place? It's a man-made stream beside the McKenzie river, put there to help migrating salmon return in September and October to spawn. There is a gate to keep out cars, but people are welcome visitors. At 2000 feet elevation there may be times when snow blocks the parking and the trail.
Expect to travel about sixty miles one way. You'll pass other letterboxes on the way. Drive East on Highway 126 past McKenzie Bridge and the Belknap Lodge turn-off. Then start watching the mile post markers and JUST AT M.P. 12 turn off the highway. Out of sight around the first bend is a locked gate, so find a place to park. From the gate walk 1/2 mile to where the sound is the loudest, the bubbles the whitest, and two waters meet. Trail between the rotten log and the cedar tree and look down to see a rock hard mother with babes tightly sheltered. Can you lift a babe without disturbing Mom? Don't worry; Mom won't care if you lift a babe to get a letterbox.
We hope that the first person to find the box will e-mail us, and we also ask that people report any trouble they have with either the clues or the box. Many thanks to all.
