In search of the "GREENBRIER RIVER TRAIL"

Access by car, mountain bike, canoe, kayak.

Fly fishermen, mountain bikers, and hikers will love this area!

From Interstate 64, take the Lewisburg Exit. Turn North on Rt.219. Check your odometer. Your destination is about 12 miles. Proceed North past the Greenbrier Valley Airport, through Maxwelton, past Granny's Attic. Roll along the green pastures dotted with hundreds of grazing cattle. At 8.2 miles you'll see a cemetery as you top the hill with a statue of a soldier. Turn right on to Anthony Road 21. Wind up and down with the beautiful pasture on your left. This is a one lane road with wide berms, typical of better mountain roads in the area. Drive carefully. Proceed 4 miles to Anthony. Keep going till you reach the river. Park at the Monongalia Boat Launch. Fish or wade a while to relax from the drive. The Greenbrier River is rarely over knee deep. A nice place to just hang around a while.

From a canoe or kayak floating down from Marlinton, Watoga, or Renick, just take-out here. To find the letterbox, just walk up the bank to the rail trail and follow the remaining clues. From a bike, just stop at Mile 14 at the "Anthony" sign. That was easy!

This trail is part of 77 miles of trail from Cass to Lewisburg converted from an old railroad, to a hiking, biking, and horse trail. It hosts a wonderful Mountain Triathlon the last Sat. in April every year known as the Great Greenbrier River Race!

From the Brown Wooden Sign that says "Greenbrier River Trail" next to the paved road above the bridge. Take a bearing of 250* and proceed to the information board with a small roof overhead. From the board, at 242* proceed down the trail 33 paces (two steps to a pace) Take a bearing of 158*. You should be facing a large gray stone about 2 feet high to the right of some old railroad cinders and smaller gray stones. Behind this stone and under a pile of smaller stones at the base, lies the "GREENBRIER RIVER TRAIL" letterbox. (A 2x4 inch camo cylinder with a nice hand carved stamp) Please leave a note of where you're from and email me if everything is in order. (I recently got an email stating the stamp had some damage but was still there. I'll be checking on it soon.)

Now enjoy Greenbrier County or go further North to Droop Mountain Battlefield, Snowshoe Mountain, Cass Scenic Railroad.....The list goes on. This area surely inspired West Virginia being known as "Almost Heaven"

Enjoy your trip! "LETSRACE" LetsRace@netacs.net
