The Georgia Guidestones
Difficulty: Easy (Drive-by)
Bring Your Own Ink (BYOI)
[Fall 2010 update: verified missing, although there is a geocache in the bushes following the same directions but on the opposite side of the attraction.]
The Georgia Guidestones are a mysterious granite construction carrying a philosophical message providing "guides" for the preservation of mankind. Commissioned by a man calling himself R.A. Christian, no one will reveal who truly funded the massive monument or why. Known as the "Stonehenge of America," the Guidestones provide specifications dealing with governance, population control, man's relationship to nature, and spirituality. The structure can also be used to gauge moon cycles and the changing of the seasons.
Facing the monument from the small gravel parking lot, find the rusted gate on your right. Count down eleven bushes from the gate (thus ignoring the smaller bushes before the gate), and you will find the box in the branches of this bush. Be discreet, and conceal well back in the branches.
Directions: From Elberton travel north on Highway 77 for 8.7 miles (toward Hartwell). The Guidestones are visible on the right, a short distance from the main highway. Don’t forget to stop at the Granite Museum in Elberton for information on the Guidestones and to say hello to “Dutchy.”
