Alive and well March 24, 2010

Location: 0.5 miles West of Shasta on State Hwy 299. Park in the turnout near the brick marker on the right side of the road, and take the steps down to the pioneer baby’s grave.

Clues – Very easy!
Trek – Very short!
Kids and Dogs - Good leg stretcher for kids, but the stroller can’t manage the steps. There is much broken glass from illicit activity, so watch your dog (and kid’s!) feet.

In December of 1864, George and Helena Cohn Brownstein of Red Bluff made a day-long journey over rough roads to Shasta to lay their baby Charles to rest. Since there was no Jewish burial ground in Red Bluff, their infant son is buried near land established by the Shasta Hebrew Congregation as a Jewish cemetery in 1857. Concern for the fate of the grave led to the rerouting of Highway 299 in 1923.

The stone you see in the fenced plot is a copy of the original, which was badly damaged by vandals in 1988. The original can be seen in the State Historical Museum in Shasta, which is also the starting place for another letterbox in the Queen City.

Following the Jewish custom of placing stones on the tombstone, many have placed toys for the baby. We are offering a dreidel to Charles, since December is the month of Hanukkah and when he would have played with it.

Clues:
From the east side of the fence surrounding the stone marker, head east on the old highway, paved in 1923. At 100 steps there should be a rock on the pavement. At 144 steps there should be a tree across the road. At 200 steps you should be at a culvert under the road. At 222 steps stop and look left to the north. See the power pole and a tree to the right of it? The power pole has a stay line on the back side that points to two pine trees further up the hill. Walk up to within six feet of the first young tree of the three in a row. Standing with a burnt manzanita stump in front of you and another at your right shoulder, sight at 50 degrees magnetic. There is a straight break in the bushes with another burnt manzanita stump (they're everywhere huh?), maybe 30 to 40 feet distant at the far side of a little clearing. About half way to it there is the bush you seek with another burnt stump at its base.
Charles’ toy lies beneath.

There is a geocache in the area, so please rehide well to prevent accidental discovery!

This letterbox is an orphan, please let us know how it’s doing!
