This is the 12th box in our ‘Legends of Jackson County’ series.

On July 16, 1863 a contingent of confederate cavalry some 2000 strong under the command of General John Morgan was making it’s way across southern Ohio. Reaching Jasper, in Pike County, the rebels killed Joseph McDougal, one of the few civilians executed in the raid. Scouts from Jackson, seeking to learn which way the rebels would head next, got the idea that the raiders would turn down the Scioto River to Portsmouth and cross back into Kentucky. They reported as much and the local militia was promptly dispatched to Portsmouth to intercept them. Too late they learned that Morgan was in fact riding hard toward Jackson with almost no one to oppose him. The raiders rode into the city late that evening. During their time in the area, the raiders spent most of their time stealing horses and supplies and there are many stories about encounters locals had with them. One such story is known locally as the Battle of Vega (pronounced Veegee) or the Battle of One since one horse and one man were killed and one boy took part in it. A group of about 60 raiders had left the main force and were roaming the countryside around Vega looking for things to pillage. They cleaned out the company store at Limestone Furnace and had just reached the intersection at Vega Methodist Church when they spotted a young man running from them. They gave chase but the young man outran them for quite a distance. They were still in hot pursuit when they encountered 2 detachments of Union cavalry out looking for them. After a quick skirmish, the rebels retreated to their main company. Try and imagine enemy horsemen roaming the countryside as you search for our uninvited guests. To decipher the clue, you only need to know General Morgan’s middle name.
