Location: Green Timbers, a part of the Pigeon River Country State Forest. Exit 290 off I-75 Vanderbilt, MI.

Terrain: Easy to Moderate, yet a three hour hike round trip; family friendly, good for a picnic, incredible views from the Honeymoon Cabin. Cabins are available first come first serve so there may be people staying there, everyone is generally friendly to hikers. The letterbox is not in veiw of either cabin.

Directions: From the center of Vanderbilt take Sturgeon Valley Rd. East about three miles to the entrance of the Pigeon River State Forest. Then go about 1.5 miles to the stone pillers on your left, park here. Take the gated path on foot, hike three miles. This is a clear, wide path. Cross the wooden bridge over the Sturgeon River. The Green Timbers Cabin will be on your left on the river.

Continue down the path around the back of the cabin. Hike around the back of the ridge, following the two-track, about 3/4 of a mile. This will take you up to the Honeymoon Cabin. Take a gander at this view overlooking the Sturgeon River Valley. Come back down the two-track until the hard bend, instead of following back down the hill, take the single foot path to your right across the top of the ridge, parallel to the river. Watch for the twin-trunked birch tree one step off the path on your left, it leans over the path.

Look over your shoulder to your right, you'll see a lichen covered burned stump, ten paces behind you on the other side of the path. Stand at the stump facing the valley, to the west. Look for three trees in a row. The one closet, about 15 paces away, is a many stemmed maple, at its base is another burned stump. At the base of the maple, on the river side, is the hollow with the letterbox. There are two sheets of bark over the hollow.

After stamping the letterbox, continue down the foot path this will take you back to Green Timbers Cabin. This way down is steep, but do-able and shorter than the two-track you took up. This is a three hour hike, approximately 7 miles round trip. The walk to Green Timbers is flat, but up hill to the Honeymoon Cabin.
