Spring Hill Cemetery (Final resting place of 2 Civil War Generals)
Huntington, West Virginia
Bring pen and ink pad.
It is believed by many that General John Hunt Morgan led the first Confederate invasion on Ohio soil in 1863. As a matter of fact Ohio was invaded by the Border Rangers, led by Albert Gallatin Jenkins, almost a year earlier than Morgan's Raiders.
Jenkins, a Harvard Law School graduate, was born at nearby Greenbottom, West Virginia in 1830(then just Virginia). He died from battle wounds in 1864. His remains were moved 2 times ending in Sprill Hill Cemetery.
Clues: Enter the cemetery from Norway Ave. As you enter the cemetery, look for the Confederate Memorial an your right. Find General Jenkins' grave behind the monument and pay your respects. From the northwest corner of the Confederate Memorial, take a compass reading of 315 degrees. Walk 7 paces (1 pace = 2 steps) to a large tree. Now take a reading of 282 degrees and proceed 24 paces to a tomb. From the southwest corner of the tomb, take a reading of 258 degrees and proceed 14 paces to an evergreen growing along the top of a wall. Look in the hole at the base of the tree.
