In search of the "GREAT BLUE HERON"

This box just got a new container, log and a new stamp carved like the old one. Maybe the raccoon will leave it alone this time! Ha ha

Near Huntington, WV take Interstate 64 to Exit 8 (5th St.)Check your odometer. Proceed South on Rt.152. Pass the new temple dome, go up a long hill, down the other side, past the ACE, past the "Triple H". At the 4 mile mark, cross the tracks, wave at Ronald, go straight another mile till you cross the tracks again. Immediately take the turning lane and go left. Notice the brown sign. That's your destination. Follow arrow to Dam. Watch for deer! Crest the dam, pass vistor's center and go down the hill to the far East end of the parking area. Park and get ready for a relaxing stroll.
From the "Shelter 1" sign, proceed due south to the second "No Swimming" sign NEAR the POINT. Take a bearing of 90 degrees and step off 22 paces (2 steps to a pace) to a foot path. Proceed East 26 paces to a Pine Tree. at a bearing of 45 degrees, proceed 6 paces to a Rusty Yellow Post. Due East 5 paces is a Double Trunk Cedar. At the base of the cedar take a bearing of 120 degrees. Look for a Mossy Double Trunk Tree 4 paces in front of you. The box with a really cool stamp is at the East base of this tree under a pile of rocks. (Shoot me an email if you find it in good order.) This box is now listed as an official Geocache site so some small trade items may show up in the box. Feel free to trade small items. Just adds to the fun!

For a more adventurous Water Access by canoe, kayak, pontoon boat (under 10 HP), rowboat, whatever......If you go from the Marina/ Boat Ramp Southeast straight to the far bank, (Look for a Great Blue Heron that frequents the shallows at the edge of the lake. He's usually there somewhere.) There's a brown sign on the bank that says Beech Fork. If you put your compass needle on due North and line up with the sign, follow the needle North to the Double Trunk Cedar on the opposite bank. Tie off to the old Mag Wheel someone left on the bank and scramble up the hill to the Cedar and proceed to the Mossy Double Trunk Tree you just passed to find the box.

BONUS! To find the "LOST TRAIL" letterbox by water access(May-November), just follow the channel 7 miles East to the campground area. (just keep the north bank on your left) You'll pass the campground boat ramp and continue East. Watch the woods to your right. You'll see the "Lost Trail" skirting the lake. (If your boat goes under a bridge, you've gone too far.) You can tie off to a tree branch and follow the trail to the large square boulder. If you somehow miss the boulder, the wooden bridges should get you back on track.

Don't forget to feed some popcorn to the Giant Goldfish from the bridge to the Marina Store. It's funny!

Enjoy the hunt! "LETSRACE"
