Alger "Texas" Alexander was an American blues singer born on September 12, 1900 in Jewett, Texas, but was raised in Richards. He sang with a deep, booming voice and often shouted out his lyrics in the tradition of field slaves. He always carried a guitar with him but could not play it, so he sought out guitar players to accompany him. His accompanists included: Blind Lemon Jefferson, John T. (Funny Papa) Smith, George (Little Hat) Jones, and Alexander's cousin Lightnin' Hopkins. In 1927 he began a recording career that continued into the 1930s and recorded over 60 rural blues songs. He died in 1954 and was buried in Long Street Cemetery, where you can find this box.
