This box is an easy 1/2 mile walk in the Canyon Ferry Wildlife Management Area just north of Townsend off US 287. From Townsend go north on US 287. About 1 1/4 miles after crossing the Missouri River bridge take a right (east) turn onto the old highway that now provides access to the WMA. This will be the 3rd road into the WMA. Follow this road for not quite 1/2 mile to a parking area where there is a break in the fence for you to go through.
Park, go through the fence & stroll along the road out to dike #4. This is a pleasant level walk; insect repellant might be a good idea in the summer though. After about 1/2 mile watch for a bench on your left (west). Take a break here & enjoy the birdlife. To find the box hidden nearby: continue about 50 paces past the bench & watch for a large driftwood stump on your right (east). From the stump take 5 large paces at 60 degrees magnetic to a large white rock. Look under its south end for a Fish Hawk.
