*** Dedicated to the memory of my niece, Laura Christina, a true beach girl ***

**MIA as of 4/1/05. Will place somewhere else in/near the park. My feeling is the park folks have taken this twice.**
** 7/06 Park staff informed me I could not place my letterbox in the park dunes because they were afraid the dunes would be torn up by searchers. So follow my clues and enjoy the view anyway. There may be something in the future to find.

Directions: Moderate to strenous.
On the beautiful coast of North Carolina there's a place down near where NC 58 ends, on the way to Fort Macon (site of the confederate stand against northern aggression), is a public beach with a bath house, concession stand and picnic shelters. This is where you'll find a little piece of sunshine. This is a microbox so take an ink pad and pen with you.

Look for a grouping of picnic shelters. There is a 'sand' fence that surrounds the park. There is a path between the fence that will start you on your journey. Follow the path (watch out for hot sand, prickly pear cactus and the occasional sand spur - wear sandals or beach shoes).

At the first fork in the path, stay left and make your first climb up a dune. Stay straight & continue the climb. At the next 'fork' either way you go you'll meet at the top. If you took the high road, look down. If you took the 'right' road you'll pass through the 'valley of christmas trees past' - a christmas tree graveyard. Every once in a while you'll catch the scent of pine in the breeze.

Continue straight and right. At the top, step over to the edge of the dune for a moment of silence as you scan the valley below - see the trees that 'gave their lives' so the dunes could live. Stay on the path for about 16 paces, then go left. Stay on the low path - a newer 'resting place' is in front of you. Then you'll come to a 'T'. Go right and follow the path's serpentine way up and down and over and curve and up, up, up, up, up, up!

At the apex of the dune - stop, catch your breath then lose it again as you take in the panoramic view. Now turn with your back to the ocean and look down. There is a 'path' to a large bush directly below you. Under the bush is a stick stuck in the sand that doesn't look like it belongs. Dig down in front of it, that's where you'll find that 'little bit of sunshine'.

Please let me know if you enjoy your visit to the dunes.

PS - Keep in mind shifting sands and rainy days may disguise the path to this location or the letterbox itself.
06Feb05 - Noticed new pine trees are being distributed among the dunes. This may vary the directions somewhat. Be aware but look for the highest dune of them all.
