The Wappoquia Loop Trail Letterboxes
(Pomfret, Connecticut)
Rating Moderate
Placed by Lenny/Kathy THE NEEDEEPS
Placed 10-27-02
Distance 1 mile
From the intersection of 44 and 169 in Pomfret Center. Travel North on 169 about 1/4 of a mile, take a right on Day Rd. Go .2 of a mile and pull in the driveway with a sign saying Trail Parking. Go down and park in the grass. You will see a white sign stating No Vehicles past this point.
Walk past that sign down the dirt road. Soon there will be a stream that crosses the road. Cross the stream on the left side. Notice Day Brook Dam on the left. When you get to the end of the dam, take the trail that goes in the woods on the right. Pass by huge pine trees. Stay straight on the trail. Then you will come to a Y, stay to the right. You will come to the minnow pond on the left. Shortly after, there will be a Y (from this point, you can reach the Mashamoquet Meadow Trail). Getting back to the Y. Take the left going up the steep hill. Come to a field of clover, walk to your right. Then there will be a trail on your right that goes back into the woods, but you stay left and follow the edge of the field. Walk all the way down with the stone wall to your right. Notice the giant oak tree on your right. The path will curve right and pass by a little pond on the left, and you will come to a T, go right here and Keep going until you come to T you go left here, When you get to the top of a small hill, there will be a big rock on the left side of the trail about 2 1/2 feet high. To the right of that rock there is a stone wall. Behind the stone wall there will be 2 trees growing from the same trunk. Your first letterbox is hidden under a flat rock on the back side of the wall between the wall and that tree.
Continue on the trail. Soon the trail will bend to the left and go back down the hill. There will be a trail baring off to the right near a huge tree. You stay straight. Soon there's a trail baring off to the left but again you stay straight. Also you can now see Lake Benjamin on your left. You will come to a Y , take a left and go up a small hill. Then there will be a large evergreen tree on the left, stop at this tree. Turn around and take 10 paces back the way you came. You will notice a large white pine on your left, a little further back to the right of the pine is a huge tree. Your second letterbox is at the back side of this tree buried at its base covered with sticks and leaves. Please rehide well.
Continue on back past the evergreen on the trail. Shortly you will come to a T. There will be a field on the left and the right. Take a left and follow the car path back to your starting point and your car.
