The Fantasy to Frontier Stamps

The Fantasy Box itself is just a memory...we think it was removed by a park worker who did trail work when a small tree fell within a foot of the boxes hiding spot. The Frontier Box is still in place!!

October 2008 Frontier is alive and well.

Where: Pt. Defiance Park - Near NeverNeverLand and Ft. Nisqually

The original stamps were carved for the "Leap From Fantasy to Frontier Event" held at Pt. Defiance Park on February 29, 2004. The event was held to commemorate Leap Day and to infuse the park with some more letterboxes! This is real easy hiking for anyone young or old and only one real hill.

Clues:
Go to Pt.Defiance Park in Tacoma, WA. Once in the park follow the signs to Ft. Nisqually and Never Never Land. Park. You may park in either parking lot. This is your one and only chance while hunting down any local letterboxes in the area (and there are a few) to use a real bathroom! So…if you have little ones have them visit the restroom located behind the kitchen/shelter.

Okay, has everyone took care of business? If so…we are off to seek out a stamp! Find the square trail marker located in the eastern corner of one of the parking lots…hint…the bathroom is within spitting distance of it! Originally the first box of the series was the Frontier one that represents Ft. Nisqually. The second stamp is the Fantasy one that honors Never Never Land. Unfortunately due to the destruction of every exhibit in Never Never Land several years ago it may never reopen. Several hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage done to that wonderful fairy tale land by some very naughty people one night. Those of us who were able to visit there as a child will have the happy memories of visiting with Jack Sprat, Mary Mary Quite Contrary, Three Blind Mice and many of those other nursery rhyme characters. I hope that some day Metro Parks can find a way to bring the area back to life and kept it safely guarded from further harm. *Metro Parks has decided to turn the entire area formerly known as NeverNeverLand into a picnic area. Unfortunately they have now removed almost everything that helped make NeverNeverLand what it was. There are no plans for NeverNeverLand to be restored as part of the park.

As you head down the trail you will almost immediately have to make a decision! Hmm…let's head into the woods!! Lions…Tigers…and Bears…oh my….Lions…Tigers…and Bears…oh….WAIT A MINUTE!! This is an urban park…and the zoo is way over on the other side…so lets reword that….squirrels…birds and deer…how cute….squirrels….birds….and deer…HOW CUTE!! The second square will guide your way. Down the hill we go and over the road we go…lets all wave to "Harvey the Hiker" and hey…see that square with the blue arrow? Hmm..that was the second one we saw! We need to head NORTH my friend, head NORTH!!

Through a thicket of Hemlock trees and see that mossy glade to the right? What a beautiful area! Hmm…Don't you think that the large stump on the right side of the trail would make a nice hiding spot for a letterbox? Or how about that moss covered fallen tree right behind it? Nope…but wait!! Look at that tree (and it's short twin) that looks like it belongs in Pisa! Could it be a clue? Hmmm…lets head over towards it. Do you see the tall "splinter" to your right? Well….hidden behind and under it is the "Frontier" we are in search of. Please rehide it carefully and naturally so that wandering joggers/teens don't find it.

Hmm….what's this…an intersection?? Which way shall we go? Hmm…we were looking for a Fantasy Stamp so….where is the yellow brick road? Since the Fantasy Stamp is just a fantasy now we will stick to the Frontier theme and as such HEAD WEST! Yes…HEAD WEST just as Lewis and Clark did so many years ago. See the orange that isn't shaped like an orange? Don't go near it…keep to the left and the safe crossing. Cross here but head in the direction the white arrows are pointing! This is a modern "trail" that we will follow for a bit. Just keep to the right side of the "trail" that way you won't have to worry about any runaway Horseless Carriages.

When you reach the crosswalk you are at your must make a decision Go left or right? See the square to your right? Go that way! Now I assume that you know where you are and how to get back!
