The old Tenino Sandstone Quarry—THE QUARRY POOL

THIS LETTER BOX IS MISSING. I PLAN TO REPLACE IT AND WILL REMOVE THIS NOTICE AS SOON AS I HAVE PUT ANOTHER ONE IN ITS PLACE.

Bring your colored inks for the most fun with the stamp.

From Olympia, head south on Capitol. Start watching your odometer at the traffic signal just past the airport. Some Mima mounds are on your left at 3 ½ miles but the giant gophers are no longer around. At 7.8 miles beyond the signal you will merge with State Highway 507 as it becomes Sussex, in Tenino. Follow Sussex west about five blocks to Olympia Street, turn left and go straight into the City Park parking area.

From I-5 north, follow 99/Grand Mound highway to stop sign at jct. with 507. Proceed North on 507, (Sussex, in Tenino). A right on Olympia takes you to the City Park. this is not particualarly germain to the directions, but, there is a sign not far from the jct. with 507 that points the way to a settlement called "Frog Hollow". I thought that was so cute I just had to mention it. Wouldn't it be fun to say "I live in Frog Hollow"?

In the parking lot, look to 210 for your quarry. “What then?” you query. Well, proceed on your 210 heading, between the parking lot and the pool, around to the front of the “Q” house. Concrete steps. How could they? With these insults to sandstone under-foot, gaze out to 220 and follow your nose to 286 feet (note, this does not mean horizontal distance[see below]). It wont hurt to stop and admire the Centennial plaque at the flagpoles, on your way. When you are absolutely sure you are 286 feet ABOVE SEA LEVEL, bear right, past the Depot Museum sign. When you pass the sign, start counting out 20 steps. On the 20th do a left face and find the plaque honoring Indian Louie (Louis Quityamals) by the museum door. The Museum is full of very interesting artifacts. You might want to take a peek, yourself. Stand with this honor to your left and continue another 20 or so paces in the direction you are facing. Look to your 2 O’clock, or, 170 if you want to use your compass. Your quarry is up the path that goes up around the old Tenino Sandstone quarry—now the Quarry Pool. There are many opportunities to take a rapid and, maybe, fatal, shortcut to the Quarry Pool. STAY ON THE PATH!! Keep children in hand and pets leashed. The path is fenced off but has been vandalized in many places. It is sheer drop to the bottom of the quarry and nature has disguised access to the plunge cleverly, in places.

Continue up the path, past the many places where it looks like a cyclone hit the fence and then up again to where the fence makes a right angle turn to the North. If you don’t stop now you are only a split second from where a cedar and a maple form a natural open gate. Don’t go through it. Here also, a log has been cut to tempt you to pause a little more than a couple of ticks. Go up the 9 of wood heading 150. Head up the trail and rightish, to see the sandstone box made of blocks. Continue to this sandstone memento and stop and ponder its purpose. Some people, seem to have concluded that it is a spray-paint endurance lab.

Just when you think the up-portion of this adventure is over; you find out that you are not quite to the top yet. If no one has moved it, you may see a small sandstone erratic along side the trail, then, when it really looks like a downhill slope, look for the syrup tree with four trunks, just off the trail to your right and a path to a precipitous drop to a ravine on your left. I left the glory to its three-trunk neighbor. If you stand on the east side of this three pillared inspirtation for pancakes, you’ll see the two foot high, or so, remainder of what might have been the fourth member of this great tree {NOTE: IN 2008 THAT REMAINDER WAS LITTLE MORE THAN A VERTICAL SLIVER BUT STILL HAS A LITTLE MOSS HAT.} It was wearing a hat of moss, the last time I looked. What I hope you will find is in the base of the tree and behind and to the left of this final clue. I hope you find it and enjoyed the search. This trail gets a lot of traffic. Please be sure the box is covered again. This will be the second placeing. The first was taken sometime before 08-08-08.

You may continue on this trail for you return trip if you like. The trail ends at a park maintenance road in another several hundred feet. Go down that road and back to the park.
You’ll be a few hundred feet east of the parking lot at the end of Olympia St. Thank you for visiting. A Google search using Tenino+Quarry is a good way to find out more about this historic town.
