Fred Harman, one of the country's foremost painters of the American West, was an American artist best known for his popular Red Ryder comic strip, which he drew for 25 years, reaching 40 million readers through 750 newspapers. It also spawned Red Ryder comic books, a radio show, TV series, over 30 movies and the Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun. Fred grew up in Pagosa Springs and eventually retired there, so when he died in 1982 he was buried in Hilltop Cemetery, where this box can be found.
