Difficulty: Easy Drive-Up about a mile off I-64

Old Scenic View was established about 1955. From this site, you can view 3 states and a panoramic view of the Ohio River valley.

From Interstate 64 Exit 1 (Kenova Ceredo) head North towards the city of Kenova, West Virginia. Cross a set of railroad tracks, pass some ornamental trees, and stop at the light by a big black train trestle. Turn left under the trestle on Maple Street. Proceed to the stop sign. Note the old green sign that points left to "Scenic View."
Turn left, pass the Painted Lady, and proceed up the hill through the old stone underpass. (note that Kenova can be completely shut off by trains except for this underpass) Wind your way up the hill to the overlook on your right. Park carefully. This old, forgotten spot isn't well maintained by the road department.

First......Enjoy the view! Look and listen for a couple of hawks that nest in this area. The horizon to your NW is Kentucky. The horizon to your NE is Ohio. At 10* NE you can see where the Big Sandy meets the Ohio River at Virginia Point. At a bearing of 290* you'll see the tallest steeple. Just to the right of the tip of the steeple you'll see the old Ceredo-Kenova High School....home of the C-K Wonders. (another box is hidden near there)

To find the box hidden here at "Old Scenic View" from the center of the semicircle, facing Ohio, just step to the blue spot on the rail. Step one pace (2 steps to a pace) to the West, step over the rail and one pace North down hill. Watch for burrs, briars and thorns at times. The box is a large gray ammo box under the honeysuckle vines and below two old white guardrail posts. There are several trade items in the box from the geocaching community. Feel free to trade for items of equal value. Just be sure to leave my first hand carved stamp for future letterboxers and geocachers to log their find.

Now go back down the hill and under the black trestle and green underpass, just past the tan metal building at the red light, is the old Griffith and Feil Drug Store. If you have time, stop in for an old fashioned creme soda from the restored soda fountain, and learn a lot about the history of my home town, Kenova, West Virginia!

Email me at LetsRace@netacs.net if you find it in good order.

Thanks "LETSRACE" (first letterbox planted)
