SADLY, REPORTED MISSING AS OF NOVEMBER 7TH, 2005 DUE TO A FLASH FLOOD. STILL A WONDERFUL PLACE TO VISIT THOUGH. IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE THAT CAN ADOPT MY SPOT WITH A NEW BOX? IF SO, PLEASE EMAIL ME. I DON'T LIVE IN THE AREA.

You can imagine my disappointment upon learning that there were no letterboxes to be found in the warm on wonderful town of Palm Springs. So, I decided to have my first letterbox (created by me) to be left behind instead of taking a souvenir! Below you will find the clues to getting to it. (Please do email me if there are things I should do to improve this...)

Being in the desert, it is important to take in the distinct beauty it has to offer. The Indian Canyon Trails on the Cahuilla (Kaw-we-ah) Indian reservation does just that! Located at 38520 South Palm Canyon Drive is the entrance to the reservation. Admission into the canyon is $6.00 adults, $4.50 seniors/students/military, $2.00 kids. It is open 8:00am - 5:00pm and you will want to arrive at least by 3:00pm in order to give yourself time to enjoy the area. The letterbox itself is hidden just near the base of many trails, so you can decide if you would like a more or less strenuous hike.

Proceed through the gate to the sign directing you to 2 possible directions. Veer left towards the Palm Canyon. Go approx. 2.5 miles to the parking area and head up to the Trading Post. To the left of the entrance to the Trading Post, you will see a path with a few steps and then it doubles you back and down into a grove of palms. Take that path all the way down to the bottom.

Follow the trail into the palms. You will cross over a very small wooden bridge. Keep going straight until you see the "Hiking Trails" sign with an arrow to point you still in the right direction. You will continue as you pass 2 huge, grey boulders on your right. Your goal is to find the main sign that shows the names of various trails, their distance, a topigraphical map, and other information about each of the trails. Once there, veer left towards the Palm Canyon Trail.

You will pass 2 black palms on the right just a few yards after the sign. Continue on this path until you see a thicker "clump" of palms in front of you. Notice there are about 3 on your right that really lean TO the right. Enter into the grouping, and then line yourself up on the path with those 3 leaning palms.

Go forward from there approximately 8 paces. You will see a palm stump on your left (which will be a good place to stamp in if it isn't too crowded). Stopping after 8 paces, look up and at an angle to the right into the clearing (at about 2:00 if you were using a clock to reference where). At the top of this mini-hill is a cluser of 5 palms practically joined together at the base. The letterbox is on the backside of these 5 palms. You will need to jet up there without being too obvious. When we were there, it was hit and miss with heavy foot traffic.

Once you get to the backside of the 5 palms, at the base of the palm in the most back is the letterbox. It is hidden under the curved cuff-like base of that palm. The cuff sort of hides it along with a few rocks to keep it out of sight. Please be sure you hide it again out of sight. They DO groom the palms now and then and we don't want the tree trimmers to trim the letterbox too!

Good luck, and enjoy! Please be sure and read the waiver of responsibility, as well as follow the reservation guidelines. If you are into a somewhat strenuous hike, try the West Fork Trail, but allow for plenty of time. It goes on and on, but is worth it! Many other easy to moderate hikes as well. Enjoy, bring plenty of water (or buy some at the Trading Post), and bring your camera!
