Birds of a Feather Letterbox is located at the Agua Hedionda Discovery Center: 1580 Cannon Rd, Carlsbad, CA 92008. Please note that the Discovery Center hours are Monday – Saturday 9am to 4pm and Sunday from 12pm to 4pm.
Begin your search at the tile mosaic designed by James Hubbell under the discovery center sign at the main entrance.
Go inside the Discovery Center and visit with the animals, there’s lots to learn.
Find Sally the Salmon Boa Constrictor…she’s friendly and likes to wrap around your arm if you’d like to hold her.
Go outside to the patio where you will find the “Open Spaces” sign and enjoy the view.
Find the drain on the ground and with the building on your right, begin walking 23 paces/46 steps ahead. Along the way you’ll pass the “Habitats” and “The Lagoon” signs on your left, the Lagoon day 2012 mural of birds on your right, then under the wooden archway until you get to the end of the green grass path.
To your left is a line of black and white tires. See if you can complete the course and walk on the tires to the end of the line.
After the tires course, turn around and follow the dirt path back up to the parking lot.
In the parking lot, locate the cement Agua Hedionda trash can with a blue recycle sign, next to the parking light.
Behind the trash can is a bush. Walk to the other side of the bush and listen to the hum of the power lines above. Under the bush find the smooth red rock that does not look like the others.
Under the rock you will find the Birds of a Feather Letterbox.
**Due to a fabric ground cover, the letterbox was not able to be placed very deep. Please take care when reburying the letterbox to bury it as deep as possible and surround it with gravel and dirt before replacing the red rock on top. Thank you!**
