Whaleback Shell Midden letterbox

Directions: Whaleback Shell Midden is an 8-acre historic park site along Business Route 1 in Damariscotta, Maine. There is a small parking lot with a little kiosk. The interpretive signs are removed for the winter.

Clue: Once you've found the park site, you struggle is mostly complete. There are two benches in the park. Take a seat at the one at the water's edge. From there, you can take the path one of two ways. One way will take you to a little sign that explains this is a historice site and you shouldn't walk or dig there. The other way takes you to the letterbox. As you walk this way from the bench, the trail turns back uphill near a stone fence. Stop at that turn and look towards the fence. You will notice three metal posts up behind it. Proceed near there. One post still has barbed wire on it. That barbed wire proceeds to and is attached to a tree. The letterbox is at the base of the wall, under a flat stone, in front of that tree (on the close side, don't climb over).
