Sports in the Land of 10,000 Lakes

This letterbox is in McLean Game Refuge in Granby, CT. You start at the Route 10 entrance. Park in the main parking area and start walking up the main paved “road.” This will turn into a wide dirt walking path where the woods begin.

The sports teams from the land of 10,000 lakes have come out to New England to play. The bus carrying the mascots decided to take a detour into Connecticut. They were driving past McLean game refuge, when the bus swerved on a puddle. The mascots went flying out the door when it opened, and rolled down into McLean game refuge. They started in together, but soon after they split up to find a place to sleep. Find them quickly, they need to be at their respective fields in two days!

Follow this main trail over a stream to a small pond. You will see a cabin perched on the hill. Go take a quick moment to enjoy the view from Senator McLean’s front porch. Now, go to the back side of the cabin. Turn left (toward the cabin), walk beside the cabin toward the trees. You will see an opening in the trees past the cabin beside a large, low-hanging spruce branch. Walk into the woods and turn to look toward the pond. Notice the Twin sister trees. Turn 180 degrees (so your back is to the pond). You will find TC hiding in the downed limbs.

Now, return to the main trail. Continue on the main trail. When you get to the point of the main trail where you can see a marked intersection ahead, and on the right side of the trail there is a large, lonely rock that looks a bit like an arrowhead sticking out of the ground, stop. Turn to face the left side of the trail – see the downed trees that form a “T”? Go off-trail to the first big pile of limbs. Look under the turf for the Vikings!

Come on back and continue on the main trail to the intersection. Take a little rest on the bench if you want. Now, head right toward the Picnic Grove. Not far up the trail you will notice red trail blazes on a tree on the right, and the trail marker sign on the left. Go 15 paces from here to see the tree with a window in its roots. Look in back of the tree to find the pack of Wolves!

Now, turn around and head back to the red trail. Enjoy this quiet trail. I walk this one a lot with my family. Keep an eye out for the 3-sisters White Birch, right beside the trail. Down the hill from these sisters you will come to a spiky stump about 3 feet tall on the left side of the trail. There is a group of young White Pine trees across the trail and a really funky tree growing in the woods behind the stump. The Lynx are hiding in the hollow of the stump. Carefully move the big piece of bark/wood to find them!

Continue on the red trail. You will eventually come to the point it meets the orange and blue blazed trails. Bear right down the hill to follow the red/orange/blue blaze trail. To find where Gophers rule, go through the walkway cut in the downed tree, on the right you will see a leaning tree pointing toward a red/orange/blue blazed tree on the left of the trail. Look for a short log laying parallel to the trail with a young tree growing out of it. Look under the bark to find the U!

Continue on the trail. Hear the kids playing at Salmon Brook Park? When you meet up with the main trail again, turn left to head back to your car. After you cross the stream, go check out the rock wall on the right side of the trail. At the far end you will find a cool hole that looks like a window with dirt on the floor. Tucked inside on the right, behind the elephant head shaped rocks you’ll find the Saints.
Now head back to the main trail and continue on back to your car. I hope you liked my first letterbox
